If an app update has annoyed you because of changes to the interface, removed certain features or is full of bugs, you probably want to go back to the previous version. Here are a couple of different ways you can undo an Android app update and revert back to a previous version.
Unless you've already installed some backup software which keeps copies of each version of an app (see Automatically backup app versions below), undoing an update isn't straightforward. Android doesn't have a handy ‘roll back’ button.
You could factory reset your smartphone or tablet to go back to the original system apps, but that won’t help you for other apps you’ve installed as they will be completely removed and your only option is to reinstall the latest version.
Undo an Android app update: Find the APK file
One way you can go back to a previous version of an app is to find the installation file for that version. Android uses APK files for apps, so called because of their .apk file ending.
As long as you know which version number you need, you can search the web for the app name, version number and APK. For example, if you wanted to find version 1.5 of BBC iPlayer, you’d search for BBC iPlayer 1.5 APK.
Be careful where you download files, as you could inadvertently download an app riddled with malware.
If you have an older version of the app on another device, you should be able to extract the APK file from it. If that device is rooted, you can simply grab the APK file from the /data/app/ folder. Otherwise, you can try an app such as My Backup Pro (below, £3) to make a backup of the app on a microSD card in that device (assuming it has one).
Once you have the file, you can uninstall the newer version of the app from your device, and copy the older APK file you found to the phone or tablet using Windows Explorer. Copy it to either a new folder, or the existing Download folder.
Then, you’ll need a File Explorer app to find the file on your Android device, at which point you can tap on it and install it. (Note that you will need to tick the box somewhere in your device’s settings menu to allow the installation of apps from “unknown sources”. Most but not all Android devices have this option.)

Undo an Android app update: Automatically backup app versions
If all of the above fails, there’s really not much you can do. To avoid ending up in the same situation in the future, it’s worth installing an app such as AppMonster Pro Backup Restore (£2.50).
This automatically creates a backup each time you install a new app, meaning you’ll always have a copy of the APK files for every version of an app you’ve updated.
With the release of Firefox 12 for Windows, Mozilla has introduced a new feature called silent updates. This feature will allow Firefox to install updates without first displaying a User Account Control (UAC) dialog. This feature is made possible through a Windows service named Mozilla Maintenance Service that is located at %ProgramFiles%Mozilla Maintenance Servicemaintenanceservice.exe. This service is not running all the time, but is started via command line arguments when a new Firefox update is available. Though, the Mozilla Maintenance Service is currently only installing updates, Mozilla has stated that it may include other command line arguments for this service that could clear the Windows prefetch, defrag a user's profile, and perform other actions that are not yet discussed.
For security reasons, if you are concerned about a program updating itself without your permission or knowledge, it is possible to disable Firefox's silent update feature. By disabling the silent updates Firefox will still be able to update itself, but you will now be prompted with a UAC dialog so that you are aware that an update is occurring. You can disable silent updates using two methods, which are described below.
It should be noted, that if you disable silent updates, that does not mean that you should not install new updates when they become available. If you do not install the updates, you could put your computer at significant risk due to potential security vulnerabilities that these updates may be fixing.
Method 1: Disable silent updates via the Update options dialog
Start Firefox and click on the Tools menu and then select the Options menu item. When the Options dialog opens, click on the Advanced category and then select the Update tab.
In the Firefox updates: section, select Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them. Then uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a background service to install updates. When you are done, your Update options should look the same as the image below.
Now click on the OK button to close the Options dialog box.

Firefox should now be configured to prompt you when you new updates are available and to display a UAC prompt before installing them.
Method 2: Disable silent updates by uninstalling the Mozilla Maintenance Service
It is also possible to disable silent updates by simply uninstalling the Mozilla Maintenance Service. If you uninstall this service, though, future updates will not install it again. In order to install the service again you will first need to do a full reinstall of the program.
You can uninstall the service by uninstalling the Mozilla Maintenance Service entry from within the Add or Remove Programs or Uninstall a Program control panel. Chaos space marine conversion. You can also uninstall this service directly by running the 'C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Maintenance Serviceuninstall.exe' command.
With the service uninstalled, you will now always be prompted with a UAC dialog regardless of how your Update settings are configured.

It sometimes happens that one of your favorite add-ons gets an update that you are not happy about. A new add-on version can for instance break functionality, introduce changes that you do not want or decrease the browser's stability or security.
If you do not want to uninstall the affected add-on, you could consider installing an older version of it to overcome the issues that you are experiencing.
This can be a temporary solution until the issue is fixed in a new update or even a permanent solution if the most recent update introduced functionality that you dislike and don't want to use at all.
Firefox users have three options to download and downgrade add-ons in the browser. It is not necessary to uninstall the most recent version of an add-on before installing the old one as you can just install it to replace the newer version in the browser.
Keep in mind though that older versions may be incompatible with your version of the browser.
Installing old Firefox Add-on versions
You have several options at your disposal to install an older version of an add-on. The first option is presented on the add-on's page over at Mozilla. Just visit any add-on page on the Mozilla Add-ons repository.
Use the built-in search functionality to find the extension of interest and open its page on the Mozilla website.
Load the page in Firefox and scroll all the way down until you reach Version History located in the sidebar. Click on the 'see all versions' link there to open a new page that lists all available versions of the selected add-on.
This opens a new page where the majority of previous add-on releases are listed. Make sure you read the 'be careful' section at the top to understand the risks.
You can install an older version of the add-on by moving the mouse cursor over a version and clicking on the Add to Firefox button to start the installation.
Note that older versions of add-ons may not be compatible with the version of Firefox. While it is possible to download these add-on versions, it may not be possible to install them in the Firefox web browser.
Release notes are usually offered for every version listed on the version history page but these are managed by the extension developer; some offer detailed information while others may not provide information at all.
If the add-on is compatible, you can install the extension from Mozilla's site directly and restart the browser afterward to complete the process. The add-ons manager should now display the installed version and not the latest one.
Alternatives
Update: The FTP alternative is no longer available. Mozilla removed the add-ons directory from the FTP server. End
You can alternatively connect to the public Mozilla ftp server to download a previous add-on version. You do however need the unique add-on ID which is not displayed publicly anymore (Mozilla switched from displaying the unique ID in the url to descriptive names instead). If you do know the ID, you can download it from the ftp server as well.
A third alternative comes, sometimes, in the form of developer homepages on the Internet (not on Mozilla). Developers sometimes offer download links to old add-on versions on their websites. It is however usually a lot easier to use the official Mozilla Firefox site for that.
How To Reverse Firefox Update Windows 7
Disable Updates
You are not done yet. If you would stop right here Firefox will pick up the new version of the add-on and try to install that version automatically. Open about:add-ons in the Firefox address bar and click on the more link next to the extension that you have just downgraded.
Locate Automatic Updates there and switch it from Default to Off. This disables automatic updates for the selected add-on. See How To Turn Off Automatic Updates For Individual Firefox Add-Ons for an in depths guide.
